Steve Brown Testimonial
Steve Brown makes his entrance at Adams Park
A crowd of around 3,500 saw Wanderers go down 2-0 to Aston Villa at Adams Park in Steve Brown's testimonial game. Brownie, now joint Assistant Manager at Wycombe, had said before the game that this was going to be used as a serious pre-season friendly and he was true to his word, with both sides making full use of their First Team squads and Brownie himself only putting in a brief appearance.
Wanderers' new look side is still looking to gel but were nearly ahead in the 5th minute when Clint Easton's effort from the left channel hit the post and then cannoned off the back of Thomas Sorenson for a corner. At the other end Lee Hendrie wasted two glorious chances to score from close range on 10 minutes, with Frank Talia and Joe Burnell providing the vital blocks in front of the Valley End. Talia saved from Juan Pablo Angel two minutes later and then denied the same player on 23 minutes. However, it was Villa new boy Kevin Phillips who opened the scoring on 28 minutes when the former Sunderland and Southampton striker lobbed Talia after a through ball from Patrick Berger.
There were 13 substitutes at the break and one of those subs, Darius Vassell, was almost on the scoresheet within a minute of the restart when he broke down the left channel but Talia was quick to advance and push the ball away with one hand.
Wycombe had a brief spell of pressure around the hour with Ian Stonebridge going close with a curling effort from the left wing on 55 minutes and five minutes later Matt Bloomfield's seeing a shot from the right beaten down by Stuart Taylor in the Villa goal.
Roger Johnson lets Luke Moore know he's thereFormer Wanderer loanee Luke Moore was introduced for Villa shortly afterwards and the visitors doubled their advantage on 67 minutes when Peter Whittingham completed a neat passing move in the box by slipping the ball inside the right-hand upright. Wanderers' came closest to scoring in the 87th minute when Mike Williamson headed against the crossbar following a ball in from the right and Jonny Dixon's follow-up was tipped over by Taylor.
