Matchday Wednesday 28th July 2004
Wycombe Wanderers 1
Charlton Athletic 2
Friendly
Wanderers went down 2-1 to Premiership Charlton Athletic at Adams Park in their second home pre-season friendly before the start of the 2004/5 campaign. The visitors, having just returned from a brief trip to China, dominated the first-half and struck twice before the break but Nathan Tyson's goal midway through the second-half was reward for Wanderers' efforts.
Tony Adams gave starts to triallists Tom Davis (ex-Fulham midfielder) and Sven Fischer (unknown central midfielder) but neither saw much of the ball and will have to wait and see whether they get another chance. The form of Tyson was the talking point for most Wycombe fans at the game, as the former Reading striker caused all sorts of problems for the Charlton defence. However, the down side of the evening was the loss of Matt Bloomfield a few minutes into the second-half. An innocuous collision with team mate Mike Williamson left the midfielder with a knee injury and he was forced to struggle off down the tunnel for treatment on crutches.
Wanderers had fell behind in the 17th minute just moments after Tyson had gone close for Wycombe, Shaun Bartlett breaking away before slotting the ball past Frank Talia in the Wycombe goal. Earlier Bartlett had hit the postwith a header while at the other end Jonny Dixon had gone close for Wanderers on 12 minutes but his shot was cut out by the visitor's defence.
Clint Easton went closest to levelling on 19 minutes when his curling long range effort left Simon Royce rooted to the spot and only the crossbar saved the Charlton 'keeper from embarassment. However, the visitors doubled their lead on 39 minutes when a quickly taken free-kick led to a low cross that Bryan Hughes side footed home.
Denmark international Dennis Rommedahl, making his debut appearance for the Addicks, went close to making it 3-0 on 50 minutes after he had left Gary Silk standing but the final effort drifted over Talia and the crossbar.
Wanderers goal came on 64 minutes when a decent move down the left flank saw Andy Reilly's delivery deflect off Dixon before being converted on the turn by Tyson who is already being seen as Wanderers saviour for the 2004/5 season. Tyson was replaced soon after the goal and with it went Wanderers best chance of snatching an unlikely draw. Wycombe finished the game with Scott Marshall playing up front as Tony Adams reshuffled the side due to the loss of Matt Bloomfield. There will now be an anxious wait while the seriousness of Bloomfield's injury is confirmed.
