Football League Trophy - First Round

Wycombe v Coventry programme 2nd September 2014 - Joe Jacobson on the cover Wanderers slipped out of the Football League [Johnstone Paints] TrophyCoventry City at Adams Park. The only goal of the game came when Josh McQuoid smashed home a Danny Pugh cross on 66 minutes. The result came after both sides had made numerous changes to their starting line-ups from the previous weekend.

Wanderers made five changes to the side that had drawn 0-0 at York at the weekend - Paris Cowan-Hall, Sam Wood, Steven Craig, Peter Murphy and Paul Hayes making way for Matt Bloomfield, Max Kretzschmar, Aaron Holloway, Stuart Lewis and Matt McClure. Meanwhile the visitors made seven changes to their side that drew 1-1 at Swindon in League One - seven of the starting line-up at Adams Park products of the City Academy.

The first half saw both sides have chances to take the lead. Kretzschmar struck an effort straight at the 'keeper on 2 minutes while Danny Swanson saw a shot blocked parried by Matt Ingram on 29 minutes and then cleared off the line by Aaron Pierre. As the half drew to a close, Josh McQuoid cut in from the left on 44 minutes and struck and effort that clipped off the top of the Valley End crossbar, while moments later at the other end Wycombe McClure was presented with an opening but struck his shot into the side netting.

This tie was never going to live up to the memorable League Cup meeting between the two sides during the 1993/94 season, although was historic as the first game at Adams Park to use the 'vanishing spray' to assist in marking ten yards for free-kicks, although that had to wait until the 58th minute. It was then City who got the breakthrough on 66 minutes when the visitors broke quickly, playing the ball wide to the left for Pugh to deliver into the danger area where McQuoid neatly side footed on the run past Ingram from six yards.

Wanderers dominated the remainder of the game with Stuart Lewis going close on 71 minutes. The closest Wanderers came to an equaliser arrived on 76 minutes when a Lewis corner from the left saw Pierre crash a header against the crossbar. Then in the dying moments a Sido Jombati header was blocked en route to goal to sum up Wanderers' frustrations for the evening.

Post match reaction:
Gareth Ainsworth Commenting after the game, Gareth Ainsworth reflected on the only goal of the game being scored while Matt Bloomfield was off the pitch receiving stitches to a head injury, "A team like Coventry thrive on the midfield. We knew that and we stopped that with our midfield. We lost one of our midfielders for five or six minutes and they took advantage. It's one of those things. People with hindsight will say, 'Why didn't you replace the midfielder?' I thought Blooms was having a cracking game. In the last 20 minutes we were creating chance after chance, forcing corners and he was at the heart of everything." However, the Wanderers boss was pleased with the his team's effort, saying, "There was only one team in that game tonight. The Coventry staff have been in and reiterated that comment to me. I thought we were superb tonight. The only thing was sticking it in the back of the net, which has eluded us. I was really impressed by the performance, which is important to me. I really believe it was a one-sided game. We camped out in their half at times. When Matt Ingram got the ball it was like, 'is he still playing?', because it was like that. If we'd have got one, we'd have got about five tonight. Hayes and Murphy are the ones who've got the goalscoring touch. Tonight they were out - they would have added their little Midas touch. The goals will come. If we save them from tonight and score them all on Saturday, I'll be a happy man." He concluded, "I'm going home content and going home with a lot to think about for Saturday. Everyone's put themselves in the frame for Saturday, without a doubt."
