Wycombe Wanderers 1
Fleetwood Town 1
Tuesday 11th February 2014
Football League Two

Stuart Lewis - thundered in Wanderers goal Wanderers scored for the first time at home in more than 8 hours of play but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with 6th placed Fleetwood Town at Adams Park. The draw keeps Wycombe two points above the drop zone, with bottom side Northampton closing the gap on 23rd placed Torquay following a 2-1 victory at Plainmoor

Gareth Ainsworth made just one change to the side that had drew with Accrington at the weekend - Max Kretzschmar being preferred to Reece Styche as the Wycombe boss opted for an extra man in midfielder. It was Kretzschmar who went close early on for Wanderers in an improved peformance and the reward came a minute before the break when Stuart Lewis thundered the ball home from the edge of the box after former Macclesfield and Preston striker Jon Parkin had headed clear a Sam Wood free-kick. The celebrations that followed were as much in relief as anything and it prompted a confident start to the second period where Wanderers had chances to extend their lead. However, it was the familiar scenario of a relatively late goal that cost the Wanderers the chance of vital points in their efforts to avoid dropping into the relegation zone. The pain on Wanderers followers was inflicted on 76 minutes when Wycombe failed to deal with a corner and Parkin was on hand to stab home. Substitute Anthony Stewart then saw a downward header test visiting 'keeper Chris Maxwell, while in the fourth minute of stoppage time Jamille Matt headed over from six yards but a winner from Fleetwood would have been hugely cruel on a Wycombe side who showed signs they are ready to battle.

Post match reaction:
Gareth Ainsworth Commenting after the game, Gareth Ainsworth said, "“The glass is half full again for me. I thought the performance was there. We played fantastically first half, we really did. Max Kretzschmar's shot from range in the first 10 seconds set the tone. Max was excellent but so was everyone. The formation we played saw us pick up a lot of ball in midfield. The boys watched the DVD of Fleetwood against Scunthorpe to suss out their strengths and they took everything on board - I thought we could have won the game. The lads are down but not disappointed. They are deflated like they should have won the game, they feel like they did enough to win the game and they did. I keep saying keep doing that and it will turn, we will win games. People were telling me to stick two or three forwards on the pitch and go and win the game, but it doesn't work like that. If you lose the game, you get slaughtered for that. What we did tonight was a professional point that potentially could have been three. We didn't seem to create too many chances on Saturday, whereas tonight we created more. We limited a team who are sixth in the league with a large budget and some good players."
