INJURY RECAP 2005-2006
www.chairboys.co.uk takes a look back on the injury situation for the Wanderers during 2005/6.

Will Antwi, a close season signing from Aldershot, missed the majority of the 2005/6 season having originally been reported to have injured his groin in pre-season training. It was later revealed by John Gorman that the injury originated when the player was a Crystal Palace. Speaking at the Fans Forum on 6th September, Gorman commented "He managed to play 35 to 40 games at Aldershot, when he was lucky the injury didn't get worse." He added "I don't want to criticise Aldershot but it's something that should have been worked on" First estimates on his return to training were late October/early November but news released through the local press at the end of December 2005 suggested he had just returned from Germany where he had received specialised treatment on his groin injury following advice from the medical staff at Chelsea. The report went on to say that scarring from the operation will be given time to heal before Antwi attempts to get the all clear to return to training. He went on to make his first appearance in a Wycombe shirt during a reserve game at Aylesbury on 21st February 2006 and made his First Team debut in the Football League game at Macclesfield on 8th April 2006.

Keith Ryan announced his retirement from playing in March 2006. He had been out of action having suffered cartilage damage in the first week of pre-season training. The Club Captain and joint Assistant Manager had an operation towards the end of July 2005. During his absence from the playing squad he had been used to keep tabs on Wanderers up and coming opposition and also scouting for prospective new players. He made a brief come back playing for the reserves in February 2006 but found the strain of match action too much and announced his retirement shortly afterwards, thus bringing to an end a near 16 year spell playing for the Wanderers.

Charlie Griffin had a tough time during the 2005/6 season. It began when he suffered a potentially life threatening blow to the head in the pre-season friendly at Oxford City on 2nd August 2005. A scan revealed a fractured bone in his face and he subsequently went for an operation. Speaking to he Bucks Free Press shorlty after the operation, Griffin said "Luckily I didn't know too much about it at the time. But now I know what happened the thing has scared me a bit. The doctors say I was quite lucky. It was quite a hard hit I took and if it had been a bit nearer my temple I could have died. I was lucky. And when people say that, it worries you a bit. It was a hard hit because it broke the bone. The bone and my sinuses were smashed and they had to rebuild it. They have put a plate in there and had to shave a bit of bone from the top and put it in there to make it all secure and a bit stronger."
Results of a scan on Friday 9th September gave the go ahead for his return which started with an appearance as substitute in the LDV tie with Dagenham & Redbridge on 18th October 2005. His first start for Wanderers since signing from Forest Green Rovers in the close came at home to Grimsby Town on 19th November and he celebrated with a goal in the 3-1 victory. Griffin bagged six more goals in eleven more appearances before he was hit with a further injury in the home game with Notts County on 14th January 2006. This time the injury was ligament damage to his ankle after he fell awkwardly. He returned again as a last minute substitute in the game at Cheltenham on 4th March 2006 and was consigned mainly to substitute roles for the remainder of the season.

The tragic death of Mark Philo on 14th January 2006 came at a time when the 21 year old was just beginning to knock on the First Team door again following a lengthy spell out through injury. Philo had missed most of the 2004/5 season due to a broken ankle and then suffered another ankle injury in the final game of the season at Bristol Rovers. His First Team comeback came at Gillingham in a LDV tie on 22nd November 2005 and he appeared again in the following round at Walsall on 20th December 2005. His return to League action was just around the corner before the fateful day of 14th January 2006. Click here to read how this tragic story unfolded and the many tributes that followed
