JOCKY LEAVES FOR WALSALL
(Thursday 25th March 2004)
Jermaine McSporranJermaine McSporran was the first surprise departure on transfer deadline day at Wycombe. 'Jocky', leading scorer with the Wanderers in 2003/4, joined First Division Walsall on a free transfer having reached an agreement with Saddlers boss Colin Lee on a deal that runs until the end of the current campaign . However, their is a slim chance the striker could return to Wycombe for the start of next season if he fails to earn a longer contract with the Midlands club.
McSporran, now 27 years old, was signed by the Wanderers in November 1998 when Neil Smillie snapped him up from Oxford City for a bargain fee of around £70,000. His spell at Wycombe was dogged with two serious leg injuries but 'Jocky', as he quickly became known, scored 41 times for Wycombe in 186 appearances and regularly attracted the interests of scouts from higher division clubs. Colin Lee was Wolves boss when he scored in the Worthington Cup tie at Molineux in 1999 and it appears he hasn't forgotten his man.
'Jocky' has said the deal was a 'terrific opportunity' and a chance to play in Division One. He told the Wanderers' official website "I will miss Wycombe, it is a great club and I shall be very sorry to leave here. When I signed from Oxford City it was the best decision of my life and I have enjoyed every moment here.
Meanwhile, Colin Lee commented later on the Saddlers Official website "Jermaine is a player that I have monitored for some time. His career has not blossomed as much as people expected, but he has a tremendous amount of pace, something that has been missing in our team. It is always difficult to identify available players with these sort of qualities, and I hope that coming here will give him a lift and he will be successful in keeping us in Division One. He is certainly a player with an eye for goal."
McSporran is just one of numerous Wanderers players out of contract this summer. Richard Harris, Gavin Holligan, Andy Thomson and Lewis Cook have already been told by Tony Adams that they will not be kept on and Holligan has since agreed a deal with Havant and Waterlooville. The remaining names out of contract are Darren Currie, Danny Senda, Chris Vinnicombe, Danny Bulman, Steve Williams, Charlie Mapes, Ian Simpemba, Michael Simpson and Scott Marshall. Steve Brown is also out of contract but has announced that he will retire from the playing this summer. Chairboys on the Net also understood that Darren Curie would be the other surprise departure on deadline day having failed to agree terms for next season and being told he could leave the club. However, talks with several clubs, including Oldham Athletic, fell through and he remains a Wycombe player. Tony Adams commented to the Bucks Free Press "If Darren Currie, Michael Simpson, Dannie Bulman or anyone else wants to leave then they can do. I only want players who are happy here and who want to scrap for Wycombe Wanderers. If they want to be Wycombe players they can stay and scrap for us and if they don't, they can go now, next month or at the end of the season."
