WANDERERS OPENING DAY HOODOO
Stockport County Wanderers will be looking to break an nine year Football League opening day hoodoo when they commence the 2003/4 programme on Saturday 9th August with a home fixture against Stockport County. Wycombe haven't won their opening game of the season since 1994 when Cambridge United were thrashed 3-0 in Wanderers' first ever Division Two campaign.

Wanderers finished in 6th place that season with a haul of 78 points and it's a position that the succession of Managers after Martin O'Neill have failed to emulate. Lawrie Sanchez came closest in season 2001/2 when Wanderers accumulated 64 points to finish in 11th place.

Wycombe opened last season with a 1-1 draw at Notts County and in previous seasons have failed to win against Crewe Alexandra (drew 1-1 at home 1995/96), Shrewsbury (drew 1-1 away 1996/97), Wigan (lost 5-2 away 1997/98), Luton Town (lost 1-0 home 1998/99), Burnley (drew 1-1 home 1999/2000), Stoke City (drew 0-0 away 2000/2001) and Cardiff City (lost 1-0 away 2001/2002)

BlackpoolThe first away League trip of 2003/4 will see Wanderers visit Blackpool on Saturday 16th August although inbetween the two opening League games will be a one-legged First Round Football League Cup tie, the draw for which has yet to be made.

The long trip to Hartlepool will take place on Saturday 25th October while the visit to Irthlingborough to play Rushden & Diamonds comes early in the season on Saturday 6th September. The visit to Sheffield's famous Hillsborough Stadium is scheduled for Saturday 31st January. See the links below for new Quick Guides to all the newcomers.

A summary of the holiday fixtures has Wanderers visiting Grimsby Town on Monday 25th August, travelling to Brighton on Boxing Day (26th December) and entertaining Rushden on Sunday 28th December. There is no New Years Day fixture this season because of the way the dates have fallen and to give Football League clubs sufficient rest should they reach the Third Round of the FA Cup scheduled for Saturday 3rd January. At the moment that date is set aside for a Division Two meeting with Grimsby Town at Adams Park. The remaining holiday fixture will see a home game with Tranmere Rovers on Easter Monday (12th April). The final game of the season is at Peterborough United on Saturday 8th May.
