WANDERERS IN SCOTLAND 2002
Dumbarton Saturday 27th July 2002 - The Rock
Dumbarton 3 Wycombe Wanderers 2

Wanderers went down 3-2 to Dumbarton in their second pre-season game in Scotland. Lawrie Sanchez stuck with the same starting XI which had beaten Ayr United the previous Thursday but despite enjoying more possession, went down to the Scottish Second Division side. Craig Faulconbridge, the lone player up front for Wycombe in the first half, had another quiet game with his new teammates but Stuart Roberts impressed again and Steve Brown (complete with new white boots) was inspiring in midfield.
It was Brown's strong challenge on 15 minutes that led to Wycombe's first real chance in the game. Darren Currie picked up the lose ball and pushed it left to Roberts before Dannie Bulman couldn't quite get sufficient contact to turn the ball in at the near post. 'Brownie' fired an effort high of the target four minutes later before Currie's pin point curling effort on 26 minutes struck the upright.
Despite the pressure Wycombe found themselves a goal down on 40 minutes when a free-kick from the left side of midfield was too powerful for Mark Osborn to hold on to and Neil Duffy was on hand to convert from close range. However, Wycombe were level within about 30 seconds when Simpson pushed the ball left to Chris Vinnicombe whose low cross was met by Roberts who saw his shot creep between the 'keepers legs and into the back of the net.
Half-time Dumbarton 1 Wycombe 1
Wycombe introduced five substitutes at half-time and consequently changed their shape to two up front as Richard Harris replaced Dannie Bulman. Not suprisingly the numerous changes disrupted Wycombe's passing game from the first half and in a two minute spell found themselves 3-1 down. First on 58 minutes a ball from the home right beat Wanderers offside trap and Craig Lynes was able to turn the ball past substitute 'keeper Steve Williams. A minute later Wanderers' defence was exposed again when a low cross from the right found Paddy Flannerry unmarked on the edge of the six yard box.
Youth Teamer Lewis Cook replaced Currie on 65 minutes and the move enabled Roberts to play on his prefered right side. The changes signalled Wycombe's best spell of the half and when Roberts played in Faulconbridge on 72 minutes the ex-Wrexham player saw his effort blocked but Cook followed up to fired the ball home accurately from the left edge of the penalty area. Cook went close with a couple more efforts in the dying minutes but Wycombe were unable to snatch the draw.
