WANDERERS - PRE-SEASON 2002
Wednesday 31st July 2002 - Adams Park
Wycombe Wanderers 0 Chelsea 1

A wonder strike by Gianfranco Zola in the 36th minute was enough to see The Wanderers beaten in their 'glamour' friendly with Chelsea at Adams Park. The Italian made the goal out of nothing, picking his spot from around 30 yards before sending the ball into the top corner of the Valley End net to amaze the 8,200 strong crowd.
The game marked the first on the new 'desso' surface at Adams Park and there was also a surprise addition to The Wanderers line-up when 6' 7" 'keeper Ian Feuer took his place between the sticks. The former Luton Town player is currently a free agent having finished a two year spell at Wimbledon and was brought in on trial to cover for the injured Martin Taylor. It proved to be a useful workout for the 31 year old American as he took Wycombe's Man of the Match award. He'll now be hoping for a second chance against Barnet on Saturday.
As promised Chelsea fielded a near full strength First Team line-up during the opening 45 minutes and had Wycombe on the back foot for most of that time. Wanderers best effort in the first half came from Darren Currie when he forced Ed de Goey to save a fierce drive. However, the visitors looked more likely to add to their total and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had a 'goal' ruled out for an infringement shortly after Zola's screamer.
The obligatory mass of substitutions followed after the interval with Chelsea making eight changes at half-time alone. Wycombe too made changes but that included the replacement of Danny Senda after he was forced to limp off shortly before the break. Late on Richard Harris was carried off by Dave Jones and Terry Evans as Wycombe ended the game looking like the walking wounded. Wanderers now have just one remaining pre-season game to play (at Barnet on Saturday 3rd August) before starting their League campaign at Notts County a week later.
