Lawrie Sanchez consults the fans at SaltergateLawrie Sanchez says that criticism aimed at him following the 4-0 defeat at Chesterfield on Saturday 22nd March 2003 is like "water off a ducks back". The Wycombe Manager was making follow up comments to the Bucks Free Press in the aftermath of the impromptu discussion with supporters at Saltergate.

Sanchez made his players apologise to the travelling fans but instead a small section of fans gave the Manager a tongue lashing for his tactics, his decision to sit in the stand for much of the game and opt out of the half-time team talk. Sanchez commented "A certain vocal section wanted to vent their spleen at me. We've had 14 good games and one blip and it has given a small minority the opportunity they have been waiting for. It let some peopleout of the bag people who have been waiting to have a go at us for 14 games and haven't been able to because we've been in a good run. Those people have an agenda with me. Whatever happens is my fault and I'm not going to win these people over. It is water off a ducks back to me."
Sanchez also rebuked the comments about watching the game from the stand, saying "Apparently it is all my fault because I sat in the stands because it is a better view. I did the same at Swindon but no-one complained because we won." Wanderers Director Rod Tomlin also defended the Manager in a letter to the Sports Section of the Bucks Free Press. He said "Lawrie sat in the stand on Saturday for large parts of the game. He was just in front of me and his seat was in fairly close proximity to pitchside. He constantly shouted instructions and urged his players on from that position. It annoyed some of the Chesterfield fans who were sitting near us. The home dug-out at Chesterfield straddles the half way line whereas the away dug-out is positioned some way along the touch lie towards the away terracing. Lawrie chose the position he felt it was best for him on the day and I have no problem with that.

Tomlin, who has been working as the Club's acting Chief Executive since the sudden departure of Simon Monkman, has been concentrating on bringing the budget back in for the current season as well as preparing for the 2003/4 campaign. He went on to say "The club is working unbelievably hard for next season in terms of raising sponsorship and offering an attractive deal in for supporters. We need to put a positive spin on everything and the fans need to be on board. We are having a Fans Forum on 17th April and we aim to send out a message which will generate the right feel good factor and get fans in the mood to want to be here with us right through next season."
The Wanderers Director admitted that he trys to interpret the Manager's mood swings still believes that Sanchez is the right man for the job, saying "He is a brilliant coach and is steadfast in his belief that we can continue the good showing which we have put on since Christmas and build a strong platform for an assault on Division One next season." The Club want to break the 3,600 sales figure of Season Tickets reached in 2002/3 and will be releasing details of special offers for early purchases. Tomlin concluded "It is imperative we are all singing off the same hymn sheet when we go into the close season because we are so serious about galvanising a very big raft of support for 2003/4"
