SANCH LEARNING ON THE NET
(Monday 9th July 2001)

Lawrie Sanchez
Lawrie Sanchez has been using the internet to help him on a UEFA coaching course. Chairboys on the Net revealed in June that the Wycombe boss had been enrolled on a specialised course for the leading lights in English management. 'Sanch' has been logging onto the net as part of the distance learning modules for The Pro License course but went away last weekend for his first residential session that is being overseen by FA Technical Director Howard Wilkinson.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Roma boss Fabio Capello were also among the guest speakers for the three-day course in Leeds which was also attended by Noel Blake, Terry Burton, Steve Cotterill, Mervyn Day, Dario Gradi, Stewart Houston, Chris Hughton, Dave Jones, Alan Smith and Mick Wadsworth. The course lasts for one year and will include club visits, overseas trips and two further residential weekends.

The course culminates in a trip across the English Channel to observe the methods used by some of Europe's top coaches. "Not only do we hope that it will make the students better coaches, it will also open up avenues outside England that were previously inaccessible," explained Wilkinson. "This pilot course aims to improve the coaching and managing of elite teams in England. It's another building block in a series of proposals that began with the Charter for Quality and will be concluded by the opening of the National Football Centre in 2004. The course also breaks new ground in its use of distance learning modules via the internet."
