SANCH WANTS IRISH STRIKER
(Saturday 9th February 2002)
Player Hunt Lawrie Sanchez has joined the rush to grab Finn Harps goalscoring sensation Kevin McHugh according to reports in the Irish Press. The 22 year old striker has scored 20 goals in the Eircom League First Division this season and Sanchez wants to bring the player to Adams Park for a trial. However, Finn Harps boss Jonathan Speak isn't interested. He told the Irish press "Kevin’s not a 15-year-old, he’s 22. He’s not going here, there, everywhere just because someone wants to have a look at him."
McHugh is also said to be being monitored by Aston Villa, Carlisle, Manchester City, Oldham and Sunderland. McHugh was due to go on a four day trial with Aston Villa but the invitation was withdrawn due to Finn Harps backlog of games caused by the recent poor weather. Speak added "The Aston Villa situation is different. It would have suited us for Kevin to go there and it would have suited him. Even our training has been affected by the bad weather. We have hardly kicked a ball on grass since we last played."
Lawrie Sanchez has been looking to bring in a loan striker to cover for the loss of Andy Rammell and also took a brief look at Ghanian international striker Emanuel Sarpong in a recent Reserve game. However, the 31 year old failed to impress the Wycombe boss. Sanchez told the Bucks Free Press said "He did okay without setting the world alight and I don't think we will be pursuing it. He wasn't better than what we have already got."
