WANDERERS MID-TABLE AGAIN?
(Monday 1st July 2002)
Wanderers are being quoted at 25/1 to win the Second Division outright in 2002/2003 by bet365.co.uk. It's an improvement on last season when the same company quoted Wycombe at 33/1. Wanderers went on to finish in 11th place and it seems that's the feeling again by the bookies.
Lawrie Sanchez goes along with the bookies in the feeling that Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic are the favourites for automatic promotion come May 2003. Speaking to the press in June he said "For me, Cardiff and Wigan are my two tips to go up, with teams like Bristol City, QPR, Huddersfield, Tranmere, Luton and maybe one of the teams that got relegated last season like Crewe or Barnsley up there." Sanchez says that it's possible to predict who will be in the top eight, the middle eight and the bottom eight but added it all comes down to finance and who has resources at hand.
Sanchez saw his team fall away in the second-half of 2001/2002 but feels Wycombe can still make a challenge despite cutting back the squad and only making one major signing in the form of Craig Faulconbridge. "There will be eight or so teams challenging and we need to be one of them. If we can get off to a good start then anything could be possible for us. I shall be looking to improve the away form as it was a major factor against us last season."
