| EASY RIDE FOR
WYCOMBE
(Thursday 6th July 2000) Eik Tønsberg (Norway) 0 Wycombe 3 reporting for Chairboys on the Net in Norway Allan Aasterud After the disastrous match against Moss earlier in the day, youth manager Gary Goodchild ordered the players back to the hotel to rest until dinner-time for the next match at 5.30pm. There were still some disappointment left in the squad. It was hard for Wycombe to accept that they had been squeezed out of the A-finals due to goal-difference. It didn't matter who I spoke to; Gary Goodchild, goalkeeper Mark Osborn, physio Terry Evans or central defender Roger Johnson, they were men of few words this evening. I've said earlier that the Wycombe squad is the youngest in the tournament, but I was wrong; second youngest. Only their opponents has a younger squad, and therefore the Brits were favourites in this game, especially when I knew that Eik only had 11 players available. With Ian
Simpemba back in the side, Wycombe put the small Norwegians under pressure straight away. He was back after suspension, and he played a key-role in this game.
Playing alongside Leeyon Phelan upfront, Paul Holsgrove had the first shot on target. But the goalie saved his
left foot-shot from 12 metres out to the right from the goal. Eik replied a minute later. A decent and a good header ended in
Osborn's safe hands. Wycombe took the lead after 14 minutes. Ryan McCullaugh won the ball in his own half, brought it forward and found Holsgrove perfectly on the left flank. He controlled the ball, looked up and saw midfielder Simpemba coming on a deep run. Holsgrove passed the ball to him, and Simpemba chipped it over the goalkeeper. Nice one! Two minutes later Eik had a defender sent off for a professional foul. That was a wrong decision, referee! The player tackled Peter Holsgrove, and it looked a fair and good tackle. Just seconds later, Simpemba was coming forward again, and now he did everything himself. With good pace, he dribbled past several players but on the way into the penalty-box, he looked for a penalty. The referee disagreed, and the play went on. Why did you do it, Ian? You were going past everyone and almost one on one with the goalie?! I have to say he's a much better footballer than an actor! Half-time Eik Tønsberg 0 Wycombe 1 Eik hit the crossbar with a header seconds into the second half. That turned out to be their last effort in the game. A brilliantly struck freekick from Holsgrove tested the other crossbar as well. After 30 minutes, Ian Simpemba scored again. This time he got his boot on the ball after Ben Townsend's corner-kick. Two minutes later and Townsend was down by the corner-flag again. This time he found substitute Johnny Dixon who volleyed home for the third goal. The rest of the game was an easy ride for Wycombe Wanderers. Full-time Eik Tønsberg 0 Wycombe 3 Wycombe Team (4-3-1-2): Mark Osborn - John Hopcraft (Jack Smillie from 34.), Roger Johnson, Marc Leach, Ben Townsend - Scott Dash, Richard Jolly, Ryan McCullaugh (Ronnie Gravin from 39.) - Ian Simpempa - Leeyon Phelan (Lewis Cook from 39.), Peter Holsgrove (John Dixon from 33.) Yellow cards: Richard Jolly, Leeyon Phelan Tactics: Wycombe actually played 4-3-1-2 in this game. In midfield Goodchild played Ian Simpemba as a offensive midfielder, behind Leeyon Phelan and Peter Holsgrove. It worked out very well, with Ian scoring the first two goals. My men of the match: Of course, Ian Simpemba was my man of the match. He loved to play offensive midfielder, and could have scored a hat-trick. Strong player who dominated on the pitch. He won many tackles today, and he was fair even if he got some negative remarks from the ref. Two goals, never stopped running and a good passer of the ball. I also want to mention the captain Ben Townsend. Yet again, he proved his versatility. He played his fifth position in four games! Today he played left-back, and he proved to be quality in this position as well. Two corner-assists, many good runs down the flank and always ready to get the ball. Young Scott Dash was lively down the right flank after halfway, and his crosses were quality.
