INJURY SET-BACK FOR BLUES
(Friday 4th August 2000)
Carroll - long term injury - picture Paul Lewis - Chairboys on the NetWycombe have been dealt another injury blow with the news that Sean Devine and Dave Carroll will both likely to miss the opening two months of the forthcoming Football League season.
Devine has been troubled with bruising to his leg that causes pain when he flexes his knee. He has had two scans to help determine the extent of the problem and has now had a brace fitted to restrict the movement and help the healing process. Devine is thought to be around two months away from match fitness.
The news on Carroll is even worse. Carroll's problem relates to a abductor injury which is very tender and is probably a result of the massive amount of games that Carroll has put in over the last 12 years at Wycombe. Similar injuries on other players have been eased by the use of steroid injections but it really is a case of rest and it maybe three or four months before the Club are willing to risk a return. Carroll has now played over 560 times for Wycombe and is just three goals short of his century.
There is some good news, however, after a X-Ray revealed that Paul Emblen's fractured leg has now healed properly. Emblen was going to return to Lilleshall for extra work on the leg but will now undergo rehabilitation at Adams Park with Club Sports Therapist Dave Jones. Emblen broke his ankle last November and made one short appearance for the reserves where he aggravated the injury.
The loss of Devine and Carroll, however, is a massive knock-back for Wycombe. Devine was top scorer by a mile last season, while Carroll was the play maker. The 2-1 victory at Cambridge on the final day of last season was one of only two victories gained in 1999/2000 without Carroll in the Wycombe line-up. The record without Devine is even worse. In the eight games that Devine missed last season Wycombe didn't register one victory (drawing 5 and losing 3) and in five of those games failed to hit the net. Those stark facts will now put added pressure on new signings Stewart Castledine and Steve Jones to perform, while Jermaine McSporran and Andy Baird will be seen as the possible saviours in front of goal.
