ALL THERE IS TO SAY AND KNOW ABOUT WYCOMBE WANDERERS ON THE INTERNET....
BRISTOL CITY WANT DEVINE
(Wednesday 28th June 2000)

Sean Devine - picture copyright and with permission of Paul DennisBristol City's new boss Danny Wilson is said to be chasing the signature of Sean Devine. Reports earlier in the week from the local press in Bristol suggested that Wycombe were in the hunt for unsettled City striker Steve Jones. This story was later upgraded to a Sean Devine swap deal, as the rumour machine swung into action.

Any talk of Devine being sold will enrage most Wycombe fans and with Bristol City also in the equation, memories of the Mickey Bell saga will come rushing back. City 'stole' Bell from Wycombe for just £150,000 back in the summer of 1997. Bell was quickly labelled 'Judus' by many Wycombe fans and is always guaranteed a hot reception when the two teams meet.

Devine's valuation by the Wycombe board will be close to £1,000,000, while Jones will barely be a tenth of that figure. Jones joined City for £400,000 in September 1999 from Charlton but never fitted into Tony Pullis's team plans and was farmed out on loan to Brentford and Southend after returning just two goals in a City shirt last season.

At 5'11", Jones may fit the 'big front man' rol
e that Lawrie Sanchez is after but the 30 year old has failed to deliver goals since moving from Bournemouth in 1996 to return his original professional club, West Ham. Jones bagged 26 League goals in 74 appearances for The Cherries but quickly moved onto Charlton Athletic from The Hammers. He had reasonable success at The Valley with 7 goals in the promotion season of '97/98 but a solitary strike at Anfield was his only goal during Charlton's Premiership campaign the following year.

His unhappy time at Ashton Gate has left the new City boss the task of off-loading the striker as soon as possible but the suggestion that Devine could be moving in the other direction will have the tongues wagging in High Wycombe. Devine signed a new contract with Wycombe towards the end of last season that takes him to the end of the 2002/3 season and with 25 goals last season, the Wycombe board will know that his value to the Club is enormous, especially with the final push for season tickets just around the corner.
