Wycombe Wanderers 1992-1993 - retro
9th May 1993 - Wycombe Wanderers v Runcorn
FA Trophy Final - post match comments
Wycombe Wanderers - FA Trophy winners 1993
Wanderers' players comments after the victory over Runcorn as reported by the Bucks Free Press.

Winger Steve Guppy sensed an air of inevitability and invincibility in Wycombe's Trophy success "Runcorn were very tough but we knew they would be. There were one or two tackles flying in and some comments about what they were going to do to us, but we were the favourites and they were going to do anything to stop us. It didn't matter, we had 30,000 people cheering us on. With that many behind me I'd take on Mike Tyson."
Dave Carroll was brutally honest about his own midfield battle in the first half. "We struggled really, with two against three: I think when I play in the middle I feel more restricted. We could not get good quality possession," he said. He confirmed he was claiming Wycombe's fourth goal, although he credited Arthur Williams' lapse for helping it on his way. "I think what he tried to do was eatch it and kick it in one movement. It was great when it went in."
Keith Ryan revealed Martin O'Neill's second-half game plan. "He was saying to keep on playing the same way and not to worry if they nicked another goal back because he always thought we would get more goals, which is what happened."
Paul Hyde commiserated with opposite number Williams over the Runcorn keeper's last-minute error. "I went up to him and consoled him. I was pleased to have won 4-1 but not for a keeper to have made that kind of mistake," he said.
Matt Crossley, resuming his favourite defensive position at centre half, admitted he was weak-kneed despite having been there before. "It got to me again. My legs were like jelly before the game," he said, adding: "Apart from a couple of early lapses I felt quite comfortable all the way through."
Simon Hutchinson was delighted to have started the game after sitting on the substitutes' bench for the 1991 FA Trophy Final. "It was unreal. It made up for the disappointment last time when I was a sub. I was a little bit surprised to be in," he said.
Keith Scott had a relatively dry day on Wembley's lush pasture. The striker admitted his disappointment at not scoring. "I hate not scoring, but I am pleased for everyone who did score. It was a great end to the season."
Wanderers' popular skipper Glyn Creaser was touched by his teammates asking him to lead them up to Wembley's royal box and collect the FA Trophy. "It was a lovely gesture and a great honour," said Blues' dependable centre-half, who has missed half of Wycombe's glorious season after breaking his heel in an accident at work.
Andy Kerr, Wycombe's captain for the final, paid tribute to Creaser. "We got together a few weeks ago and talked about sending Creas up to get the Trophy. Ever since I've been here he's been a brilliant influence and he has played an important part this season. It was important for me for him to be up there. I just grabbed him and shoved him up there. I know I was captain today, but as far as I am concerned there's only one skipper and that's Glyn." Kerr said of his 20th-minute goal: "It was an amazing feeling. I didn't know what to do. I have scored a few goals in my career but this was one of the most important."
Jason Cousins proved that practice makes perfect when he gave Blues the best possible start in the FA Trophy Final by scoring with a spellbinding 20-yard free kick after missing 25 in training. "I had been practising free kicks all day yesterday. At least 25 shots bobbled about and ended up behind the goal, but today I felt confident that I would score. I just said to Dave that there was no way he was taking that free kick," he said. "As soon as the ball left my foot I just knew it was going into the net. I then just tried to run to where the noise was."
Steve Thompson said of his goal: "Gupps corner was a brilliant cross. I knew it was coming straight for my head. I just knew all I had to do was touch it in. It was total ecstasy."
