Exciting end to the 1974-75 season - part 2

Keith Searle - nine minute hat-trick against Bromley - picture from Bucks Free Press It was off to Walton & Hersham on Tuesday 22nd April 1975 where goals from Tony Horseman (2), Dylan Evans and Micky Holifield secured a comfortable win against a side who had fallen from grace after a few years in the Amateur spotlight. Once again there was encouraging news from Enfield’s game the same evening as they dropped points again in a 2-2 draw at Hitchin Town. The margin was now down to just five points and with Wycombe still having a crucial game in hand.

Wanderers were back in action just two days later (24th April 1975) as they travelled to Green Pond Lane for the meeting with Walthamstow Avenue. The biggest shock of the evening came before kick-off when it was revealed that regular ‘keeper John Maskell had gone down with tonsillitis the previous day. With no suitable replacement available, it was left for outfielder Dave Bullock to take his place between the sticks. Bullock had actually played once before in goal for Wycombe - a 2-1 victory over Enfield the previous season. This time on Avenue’s beach like pitch he delivered a near faultless game after an 8th minute goal from Alan Phillips settled the early worries. Micky Holifield added a second in the 78th minute to seal the victory.

The following evening Enfield were in action at Oxford City and the sprinkling of Wanderers fans in the crowd came away smiling after the Londoners had dropped more points in a 1-1 draw. There were no games on the Saturday due to the FA Trophy Final but Wanderers returned to action on Tuesday 29th April 1975 with a home game against whipping boys Bromley while Enfield took on Slough Town at Southbury Road. Wanderers were lagging Enfield on goal average before the start of the evening and needed a seven goal victory to overhaul their advantage. Wanderers went one better with an 8-0 victory and yet again Enfield slipped up as they were held 0-0 by The Rebels. The victory over Bromley, watched by a midweek crowd approaching 2,000 saw Keith Searle bag one of the fastest hat-tricks in the history of the Club. He scored his first on 4 minutes and had completed his hat-trick just nine minutes later. Dylan Evans chipped in with a hat-trick too while Tony Horseman had to make do with a brace.

The 1975 FA Cup Final the following Saturday meant another break in the Isthmian League fixtures before the ‘big one’ on Thursday 8th May 1975 when Enfield made the trip to Loakes Park. An expectant crowd of 4,500 gathered to see the spectacle but with defences on top the game fell a bit flat and ended goalless. Two days later Wanderers were held to a 1-1 draw by Tooting & Mitcham at Loakes Park and it left the situation at the top of the table as close as it had been all season.

Isthmian League table - top three - up to and including Sat 10th May 1975
          Pl W D L F A Pts GA
Enfield 41 28 8 5 74 25 92 2.960
Wycombe 40 26 11 3 89 30 89 2.967
Dagenham 39 28 5 6 90 35 89 2.571
Wanderers had two games to play - at home to Bishop’s Stortford and at home to Dagenham. In between those two games Enfield would play their final game of the season - at home to Dagenham. Wanderers’ goal average was now slightly superior than Enfield’s going into those final games and suddenly the goals accumulated in recent weeks were beginning to look more and more valuable.
